911Text A

METCAD now has the ability to handle emergency SMS text messages sent to 9-1-1 in Champaign County.  METCAD’s new Text to 9-1-1 service will benefit those who cannot safely call 9-1-1 in an emergency, as well as individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech impairment.

To send a Text to 9-1-1, simply put “911” in the “To” section of your text message, then include information about the emergency and its location in the body of the text.  9-1-1 operators will have the ability to text the sender back to request additional information or to confirm that help is on the way.

Illinois State Law does not allow the connection of auto dialer devices which automatically dial the number 9-1-1.  Specific language can be found below.  This includes devices which can be activated by a user wearing a pendant type of device or medical notification type devices.  This law is in place because these devices frequently are activated accidentally and occasionally malfunction, tying up 9-1-1 lines and first responders.  In addition, METCAD does not accept auto dialer alarms on any of our emergency or non-emergency lines.  Here are some suggested options for using such devices:

Connect them to an alarm company

Connect them to a private answering service

Program them to dial a reletive, friend or neighbor

From the Illinois Administrative Code:

TITLE 83: PUBLIC UTILITIES
PART 725 STANDARDS OF SERVICE APPLICABLE TO 9-1-1 EMERGENCY SYSTEMS
CHAPTER I: ILLINOIS COMMERCE COMMISSION
SECTION 725.510 ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES

Except for the purpose specifically indicated and authorized by law, the installation of or connection to the 9-1-1 system network of an automatic alarm, automatic alerting device, or mechanical dialer that causes the number 9-1-1 to be dialed is prohibited in a 9-1-1 system (e.g. elevator one button phones, security pole one button phones, or burglar alarms).
